A.T. Grant, President of Incite Brain Works, Inc. got the conference off to a swinging and swaying start with her keynote address about the colorful crochet of the Caribbean. A.T. told of the Rastafarians, a cultural/spiritual movement where observant men keep their dread-locked hair under crocheted tams. This evolved into a cottage industry where third-world women (and a few men) crochet for a living.
Several members brought completed crochet projects to show off and talked about their inspiration, the materials used, and what they learned by doing.

Those who wished to participate brought a small crocheted item that they designed themselves or made from a pattern. Those who brought a gift then selected a gift.
Everyone who attended the reception received an "Around the World" potholder designed by North Coast chapter member Denise Yancey and produced by members of the North Coast chapter and the Wickliffe Craft Club. Materials were donated by Coats & Clark.
The Opening Reception was the first chance to win prizes donated by various corporate sponsors.
