Guild of America'sTo enter this CGOA-sponsored contest, conference participants created an original design based on the basic hat pattern provided to show off the versatility and endless possibilities of crochet. Nancy Brown, chairperson of Chain Link '96, Skacel yarn representative, and designer of hats featured at Isabella Boutiques, Chicago, was the judge. Hats were displayed in the Juried Exhibit room.
*Most Colorful: Won by Lori Zalewski.
Victorian Video Productions, producers and distributors of quality, award-winning
instructional videos on traditional and contemporary handcraft techniques
since 1985, awarded the winner these three videos: "Bead Crochet"
with Carol Perrenoud, "Tapestry Crochet" with Carol (Norton) Ventura
and "Crochet from Start to Finish" with Bev Dillon.
*Most Outrageous: Won by Paula Linton-Allison.
Peggy MacKenzie of Unique Kolours in Moorestown, NJ and the exclusive U.S.
representative of Colinette Yarns, awarded a selection of these unusual,
vivid and amazingly beautiful hand-dyed yarns. Peggy says, "Most people
have never seen anything like it; there is something so different and instantly
recognizable about Colinette Yarns, almost as though they carry a signature!"
*Best Overall Crochet Technique: Won by Larisa Walk.
ASN Publications, whose slogan is "Excellence in Instruction,"
was the proud sponsor of this category. They awarded the winner the complete
library of their "101 Project Series."
*People's Choice Award: Won by Barbara Sizemore.
CGOA, in conjunction with Classic Elite and Brittany Hooks, awarded a leather/tapestry
bag imported from Ecuador that is filled with Classic Elite Yarn and Brittany
hooks. "By Hand Crafts Division" with yarns and patterns inspired
by ethnic textiles, awarded $100 worth of tapestry two-ply yarn.
Yarn: worsted weight Crochet hook size G (or size needed to obtain gauge)
Gauge: 4 sc = 1 inch
Size: 21 inch circumference (this can be adjusted by adding or subtracting increase rounds)
Note: Do not join rounds. Mark the first stitch of each round.
Rnd 1: Ch 2, sc 7 sts in 2nd ch from hook.
Rnd 2: 2 sc in each st around (14 sc)
Rnd 3: 1 sc in next st, 2 sc in next st, repeat 6 more times (21 st)
Rnd 4: 1 sc in each of next 2 sts, 2 sc in next st, repeat 6 more times (28 st)
Rnd 5: 1 sc in each of next 3 sts, 2 sc in next st, repeat around (35 sts)
Rnds 6-12: Continue as established, inc 7 sts evenly around, adding 1 more st in between each increase until there are 84 sc
Rnd 13+: Mark this round, then work even on 84 sc sts until hat measures 4 inches from marker. Fasten off.
