Correspondence Course: Basic Overlay Crochet

Instructor: Melody MacDuffee
Description: Learn the basic concept behind Overlay Crochet, mastering new and more elaborate applications of color and texture as you create a richly colored and textured square by working a background fabric of single crochet stitches while simultaneously “overlaying” it with long or complex stitches and clusters of stitches. By the end of the course you will have created a vibrant square characterized by varied linear, floral and geometric design elements.
Goals: Learn the basic concept behind Overlay Crochet for future applications as you complete a 12" X 12" (approx.) square suitable for use as a pillow cover, purse, hat, jacket appliqué, etc.
Yarn and Hook Used: worsted weight yarn; Size I, J or K aluminum hook
Stitches Student Must Know: chain, slip stitch, single crochet, double crochet, triple crochet
Skills Required: strong knowledge of and facility with basic crochet stitches; some experience with cable or Aran crochet helpful but not required; ability to read complex written crochet instructions
Length of Class: 6-8 hours
Time to complete: 4 months
Finished Size: 12" X 12" (approx.)
Materials Provided: none
Materials Student Provides: 6 colors worsted weight yarn in harmonious colors (stiffer yarns work best); Size I, J or K aluminum hook; scissors
