The Master of Fiber in Thread course is open to CGOA national members only.
Student must complete this one course to receive a Master of Fiber in Thread. Thread is defined as a fine yarn, of which cotton is the most common, worked with steel hooks in sizes 00 to 14.
Types of thread
Cotton
Compare swatches of pearl cotton (2 ply), 3 ply crochet cotton, and 6 ply cordonnet
Discuss features and uses of each.
Other natural fibers -- Lace weight wool, linen
Make swatches and discuss features and uses
Synthetics -- Rayon, microfiber, nylon
Make swatches and discuss features and uses
Basic Shapes
Square, rectangle, circle, oval
Swatch of each with general formula for making each flat in both sc and dc.
How to change general formula to make each cupped.
Methods of working
Grounds
Solid
Swatches – sc, dc, seed stitch, a couple multi-stitch patterns
Lace
Swatches -- pineapple, fan stitch with at least one using trc or taller stitches
Mesh
Swatches -- filet, chain meshes (net stitches) w/wo picots
Motifs
Swatches -- square and round bedspread/tablecloth worked from center out
Shapes to be joined later
Swatches -- Irish crochet
Join between right-side up motifs
Join with solid mesh over backs of upside-down motifs
Swatches -- freeform
Edgings and Insertions
Swatches -- lace
3 dimensional
Finishing
Edges
Swatches – crab stitch, picots, etc.
Blocking
Blocking in general (doilies, garment pieces, etc.)
Blocking to square up filet crochet
Starching 3 dimensional shapes
Final Project
Min. 180 sq inches (approx. 12” x 15”) in size 20 or smaller thread
Must use a variety of stitches (filet crochet with limited stitches is not OK)
May use commercial pattern.
