Crochet Guild of America
Professional Membership Frequently Asked Questions

Updated:

Who is eligible?

Any CGOA member who derives an income from a crochet related activity such as designing, teaching, publishing, contract crocheting/pattern testing, editing, etc. (Please see the application form for the complete list.) Two year’s experience operating as a business, as demonstrated by the criteria listed on the Professional Membership Application Form, are required.

I’m already well-known in my field. Why should I have to prove it?

We know it is an inconvenience to fill out another form. However, it is the only way we have of putting together accurate and complete information for our database. The form also allows you to indicate your preference as to whether or not you wish to be listed in the Professional Member Directory.

What if I don’t have two years experience?

Those individuals just beginning a crochet career are encouraged to submit an application. It is helpful to include a statement of how long you have been in business and your career goals. These applicants are designated as Associate Professionals.

Why have two categories?

Having a separate designation for aspiring professionals allows us to identify those individuals who may benefit from the assistance of a mentor.

What is in it for me to become a Professional Member?

Professional Membership allows you access to a private e-mail discussion group where members discuss business topics and receive information on design, t eaching and other industry opportunities. Professional Membership provides you with the opportunity to be listed in the Professional Member Directory showing your contact information and your professional categories and areas of specialty. This provides an easy way for corporate members and other professionals needing your skills to get in touch with you. CGOA frequently receives requests for assistance in locating designers, teachers, editors and other crochet professionals and referrals are made through the Directory.

What is in it for me to become an Associate Professional Member?

You will have access to the same e-mail discussion group as the Professional Members thus providing the opportunity to ask questions and receive answers from a broad base of crochet professionals with varied backgrounds. You will also have the opportunity to request an individual mentor. Every effort is made to match aspiring professionals with established professionals in their chosen category.

What if I'm not a member of CGOA?

Applicants for professional membership status must be mem bers in good standing of CGOA. Go To Membership Form to join CGOA! Submit your dues and Membership Form with your Professional Membership Application Form.

My membership isn't due for renewal. Do I have to pay my dues twice?

No. Filling out the Professional Membership Application Form is simply a way to convert from General Member to either Associate Professional or Professional Member. Your renewal date will stay the same. There is no extra charge to convert your membership.

What happens after I submit my Professional Membership Application Form?

We make every effort to process the application and respond within 30 days. As a time and cost saving measure most of our correspondence is by e-mail. You will be notified as to whether you were accepted as an Associate Professional or as a Professional Member and receive an invitation to join the e-mail discussion list. Since both e-mail and regular mail sometimes go astray if you have not heard from us within 30 days of submitting your application please contact ProfDev@crochet.org
